Wattyl Lake Taupo cycle challenge

The Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is New Zealand’s premier cycling event set in the picturesque Central North Island.

Riders can choose solo, endurance or relay challenges based around a 160 km circumnavigation of Lake Taupo and the event has recently added a range of mountain bike challenges to complement the road events. While the event is largely non competitive and caters for every level of rider it does offer three race options for elite cyclists.

The event regularly attracts in excess of ten thousand riders and in 2006 was admitted to the prestigious UCI Golden Bike Series, thus gaining recognition as being one of the world’s top seven rides.

The event started in 1977 with 26 cyclists riding a circuit of Lake Taupo and has grown to many thousands of riders participating in 17 different categories on the day, supported by a lead up week of cycling activities.

This year, a number of Jennian Homes teams entered the event and had a ball! Check out the results:

Simon, Julie, Blair and Wayne completed 40km each.
Kathy and Mari did 80km each, and Kathy decided not to stop so did the 160km as well!
Paddy finished with a time of 5hr.07 and Steve managed 5hr.13
